We are releasing this season’s Sportsman Chinos as a matching companion to the slate grey Continental Sportcoat and Continental Vest. The fabric is the exact same fancy blend of 60% cotton and 40% linen 8 Oz. denim twill, same NOS batch.
A Continental three-piece suit in slate grey can now be put together from our mfsc Sportsman Catalog of vintage-inspired made-in-USA menswear!
The NOS pocketing/facing may differ slightly for each of those three pieces, but consider this as a stylistic nod to eclectic miss-match linings of period tailor-made garments, when fabric availability was limited and all yardage was considered precious. We like this no-waste approach.
Please note that the slight color variation of the slate grey jacket/pants set in the photos above reflect the fact that my Sportcoat is from 2016 and was washed a few times, and the 2021 Chinos have merely been rinsed. This light-colored denim fabric actually has very nice patina potential.
Our Sportsman Chinos and Continental Trousers feature similar design details, but differ fit-wise. While the top block is comparable on both models, the Sportsman Chinos are cut with a more generous 40s/50s-style leg, and the Continental Trousers have a slimmer leg profile. The choice is a matter of one’s personal style preferences and body type.

SIZING/FIT:
The SPORTSMAN CHINOS are sold RAW (unwashed) and will shrink to tagged size following the usual protocol:
• Cold soak for about 30-40mn with occasional hand agitation.
• Washing machine spin dry.
• Line dry. (No heat dryer)
These trousers are true-to-size, with a ‘forgiving’ waist (aka vanity size), adjustable via the rear cinch. Go for your usual size in mfsc pants, but consider that the full leg and higher rise will provide an old school vintage work pants silhouette.
I opted for a W30 in these (at 5.7’’ / approx. 150 lbs, I navigate between W30 and W32 in mfsc pants/jeans), as I wanted more of a 60s Continental Trousers silhouette than a 40s/50s workwear chinos fit.
With a generous inseam, the overlocked leg opening is left open to your cuffing preference. I opted for a simple 1.25 inch hem, DIY with a regular single needle machine.
CARE:
When needed, machine wash on DELICATE, pants inside-out, cold water with minimal environmentally-friendly detergent and line dry.
Do not use the washer’s heavy-duty cycle, as you wouldn’t with any piece of menswear suiting.
Heat dryer is also not recommended and may result in excessive and irreversible shrinkage.

The Continental Two-Piece Suit combines two of our popular classic patterns, the MF® Continental Sportcoat and Continental Trousers, both staples of our made-in-USA Sportsman catalog.
The unstructured blazer style of the MF® Continental Sportcoat was initially inspired by a vintage French 1950s cotton twill work coat, jazzed-up by our Design Dept sometime in 2016. The MF® Continental Trousers’ pattern introduced the same year drew inspiration from 50s-60s tailoring, vintage casual wear, and timeless slick silhouettes.
Released since in an array of NOS and Japan-milled fabrics, both sportcoat and trousers are quite versatile garments. Equally intended to be worn mismatched, as a two-piece suit, or paired with whatever one is comfortable with, the Mister Freedom® Continental series’ only commitment is to be stylish, flexible, travel-friendly (i.e. low-maintenance), and USA-made.
This FW2020 “Rive Gauche” edition features the same grade of 14 Oz. wide-wale corduroy of the 2019 Mattock Jacket, a fabric inspired by 1930s-40s French Velour d’Amiens and discussed here in its historical background. We couldn’t resist requesting another batch to be milled for the Continental suit.
Regarding semantics, “Rive Gauche” refers to the left bank of the Seine, splitting the City of Light in half. The famed river was instrumental in elevating Paris as France’s capital through the years. The city’s nautical motto “Fluctuat nec mergitur” (something like “rocked by waves but never sunk”) suggests Paris’ long and troubled history. Its “Rive Droite” (right bank, north of the river) has been perceived as conservative and upper class territory, while the “Rive Gauche” was more blue collar, attracting free-spirited intellectuals, artists… Those lines have obviously been blurred for decades, but still fiercely-debated at the “café du commerce”.
Bar-room politics aside, corduroy fabric has traditionally been associated with the working class in Europe, and its resurgence in French menswear in the late 1960s~1970s signaled a new popular appeal for “simple” values and “liberal” references in casual fashion.
A stereotype “prof de Géo” (Geography teacher) clad in a brown corduroy suit, Fair Isle sweater vest and red scarf, strolling around the Quartier Latin circa 1975, might ring a bell for some Parisian old timers.
Our “Rive-Gauche” two-piece carries that old school professor vibe, but will morph into anything according to how one styles it. The Sportcoat is cut quite trim and on the shorter side, for more of a 1930s vibe than the longer deep vent back of 1970s suit jackets.

SIZING/FIT
This explains how we size our garments.
The Continental “Rive-Gauche” Sportcoat and trousers come raw/unwashed. We recommend the usual initial 30mn cold soak/occasional hand agitation/spin dry/hang dry process.
The tagged size reflects the size of the garment after going through this process. The subtle variation of shrinkage between body fabric/lining fabric/cotton thread will result in normal puckering and roping, slightly altering the fit and drape.
I personally opted for a snug Size 38 (Medium) in this corduroy Continental sportcoat, and a comfortable W32 trousers. These are my usual sizes in the Continental series and most mfsc garments. I am about 5’7 ~150 Lbs.
Sportcoat sizing:
This “Rive-Gauche” corduroy Sportcoat release is cut quite trim, and sizing-up might be an option for some, especially if one plans to layer with a sweater or thick shirt, or just wants a more relaxed/unstructured look. The cut is similar to that of the recent “Parisien” Sportcoat, with a trim/shorter silhouette typical of 1930s mens blazers. The shorter length might not be ideal for tall individuals not comfortable with a “period fit” and vintage silhouette.
Trousers sizing:
The Continental “Rive-Gauche” Trousers are true to size. If you are a measured waist 32 inches, you are most-likely a stamped W32 in these. The top block is fairly snug, with a slim thigh and straight leg. A W31 was too tight on me.
To accommodate fine tuning for the silhouette of your choice, we are releasing these in a few select odd sizes too (W29, W31 and W33).
Please note that the Continental Trousers pattern might not be a good option for all body types. Proportion-wise, those with muscular legs will probably look better in our regular Sportsman Chino models.
Trousers hemming:
After the initial soak/hang dry process, we recommend settling down on the final length of the bottom hem after gently wearing the trousers around the house a bit. The cotton fabric tends to naturally bunch/wrinkle and pull the leg up slightly. Letting this specific fabric react to your own body for an hour or so will allow you to decide on a proper classic leg break that works for you.
I opted for a simple 1½ inch hem with no fold, with a slight break.
Please refer to sizing chart for approximate raw/soaked measurements. Soaked = 30mn cold soak, spin dry and line dry.

CARE:
Although low maintenance, both corduroy Sportcoat and Trousers should be considered as a delicate garments and treated with care.
We recommend professional dry-cleaning when needed.
Carefully hand washing in cold water, minimal eco-friendly detergent and line dry is also an option.

Mister Freedom® “Le Parisien” Continental two-piece suit (Sportcoat & Trousers)

Sometime in 2019, we reached out to our friends and classics’ replica specialists at Toyo Enterprises and submitted a vintage fabric swatch cut from a 1920’s-30’s pair of French work trousers. After studying each yarn of the intricate weave under a microscope (textile expert Arai San literally does that), instructions and tech-pack were given to a Japanese fabric mill to replicate the challenging textile…
The result is the magnifique selvedge Mock-Twist stripe twill of our “Le Parisien”!
Mock twist refers to the twisted white and black yarns giving the “salt & pepper” (or covert) aspect to the twill, with its specific vintage French workwear characteristics. Fancy striped patterns were quite typical of 1920’s-40’s French utilitarian clothing, maybe an attempt to add a bit of “chic” to blue collar outfits, and a touch of “mode de la ville” (city fashion) to rural dwellers? Period menswear catalogs and vintage swatch books document the wide variety of stripe woven fabric patterns available at the time, eye candy for the textile collector.
Today, these bold stripes may be more associated with “The Godfather” than with hard-working farmers, but the versatility of these washable cotton fabrics – suitable for both field work and as Sunday attire – , along with their sturdiness, might have been the reason of their popularity with the working class.
Significant amounts of new-old-stock workwear were still sitting on store shelves in France up until fairly recently. The old guard of French vintage pickers and theater costumers will remember a specific Army-Navy surplus store on the docks in Bordeaux, France, with stacks and stacks of NOS workwear, in all kinds of stripe twills or black/blue moleskine, just sitting there and gathering dust… My Dad had taken me to that specific store in the 1970’s-80’s, to stock-up on new blue jeans and old useful military gear, and I, of course, have been back and raided the place several times since. There were surprisingly still piles of dead-stock oldies and random goodies as-of my last visit in 2017. The lady still running the shop remembered my Dad. He was a charmer…
This original trousers/sportcoat set is the latest addition to the Mister Freedom® Continental family, an all made-in-USA concept of vintage-inspired glad rags for discerning adults.

This Mock-Twist twill specific weave tends to slightly loosen up (stretch) after a rinse.
I personally opted for a snug Size 38 (Medium) in the Continental sportcoat and comfortable W32 trousers. These are my usual sizes in the Continental series and most mfsc garments.
Sportcoat sizing:
This Mock-Twist Sportcoat release is cut very trim compared to previous versions, and sizing-up might be an option for some, especially if one plans to layer with a sweater or thick shirt, or just wants a more relaxed/unstructured look. I actually could have gone with a Size 40, but decided to stick to Size 38 and only pair the jacket with a light dress shirt.
Trousers sizing:
The Continental “Le Parisien” Trousers are true to size. If you are a measured waist 32 inches, you are most-likely a stamped W32 in these. The waist is quite generous and I could fit into a W31, but preferred the leg silhouette of the W32, allowing wear with both dress shoes and Road Champs.
To accommodate fine tuning for the silhouette of your choice, we are releasing these in a few select odd sizes too (W29, W31 and W33).
Please note that the Continental Trousers pattern might not be a good option for all body types. Proportion-wise, those with Ronaldo-style muscular legs will probably look better in our regular Sportsman Chino models.

The cotton fabric tends to naturally bunch/wrinkle and pull the leg up slightly. For a classic and more period look, we do not recommend bulky rolls, hand cuffing or contemporary “accordéon” stacking with these slacks.

To show the Continental’s versatility, and for elegant mix ‘n match options, we took the Continental from doing the Hustle in Las Vegas to doing the Ska in Kingston. Our original suiting patterns get a late 50’s – early 60’s textile treatment this time. The result is old school yet timeless, you get the flavor.

Sportsman Collection Fall 2016
For Fall 2016, we have secured a fancy batch of New Old Stock denim for a special “Player” limited edition of our Continental sportcoat/vest/trousers combo. These MF® original Continental patterns, added to the Mister Freedom® Sportsman ongoing catalog of classic silhouettes and styles around 2015, have been popular with the discerning Man of the World looking for an elegant alternative to the Alcatraz convict workwear look.
This “Player” denim twill is similar to that of the Spring 2016 Continental trousers, but a bit lighter in color. The ‘Player’ is a 10.5 Oz. crosshatch denim twill, light indigo moss blue-green color, a slubby weave of cotton-linen blend (linen or similar natural vegetal fiber), with a 1960’s ‘sharkskin’-type sheen, fabric milled in Europe.
We have added an irresistible 60’s-70’s ‘leisure suit’ touch to our Continental “Player”, by enhancing the style with orange contrast stitching. Yumm. The lining we opted for is also a New Old Stock find, a fancy woven stripe 100% cotton twill, also of European origin.
The ‘Player” Continental sportcoat, vest and trousers are offered separately, but are available as a specially-priced “Huggy Bear” set, for the stylish high-rolling good fella keen on the Las Vegas hustler look.
The Continental three-piece leisure suit Player Edition is designed in California by Mister Freedom® and manufactured in California, USA, by Mister Freedom® in collaboration with Sugar Cane Co.

SIZING/FIT:
This explains how we size our garments.
Each part of the Continental three-piece leisure suit comes raw/unwashed. We recommend the usual initial 30mn cold soak/occasional hand agitation/spin dry/hang dry process. The tagged size reflects the size of the garment after going through this process.
Please note that it is the nature of cotton-vegetable fiber blend textiles to wrinkle and slightly stretch back and forth with each laundry/wear cycle. For example, freshly laundered linen garments fit tighter in the morning than at the end of the day. If you prefer a clean, pressed look following the initial soaking process, the Continental Vest can be steamed or professionally pressed.
I personally opted for a Size 38 in the Continental sportcoat and vest, and Waist 32 trousers. These are my usual sizes in mfsc garments.
Trousers sizing: The Continental Trousers are true to size. If you are a measured-waist 32 inches, you are a stamped W32 in the Continental Trouser. Do not size down on these. Please note that the Continental Trousers pattern might not be a good option for all body types. Proportion-wise, those with very muscular legs will probably look better in our regular Sportsman Chino models.
Trousers hemming: After the initial soak/hang dry process, we recommend settling down on the final length of the bottom hem after gently wearing the trousers around the house a bit. The crispy cotton-linen fabric tends to naturally bunch/wrinkle and pull the leg up slightly. Letting this specific fabric react to your own body for an hour or so will allow you to decide on a proper classic leg break that works for you.

The “Player” denim fabric and the stripe cotton lining are pretty much sanforized, but puckering and roping resulting from the rinsing process will slightly alter the fit and drape. Further shrinkage and creasing might be achieved with full wash cycle (on delicate) and a heat dryer cycle, not recommended.
